Journaling as a tool for self-care
Self-care isn't just about spa days and bubble baths. It's about checking in with ourselves and creating space for our personal growth. One of the simplest yet most powerful ways to do this? Journaling, of course!
The fact that you’re here means you’re probably aware that this practice can help you to feel good. But if you’re into the details like I am, here are five reasons that journaling can be a game-changer for self-care:
1. It helps you to process emotions
If you ever feel overwhelmed or unsure, writing down your thoughts can help you untangle emotions and gain clarity. Journaling creates a safe space to express all emotions, negative or positive. Instead of bottling up your feelings, you can release them onto the page, making it easier to understand and navigate them.
2. It reduces stress and anxiety
Studies have shown that journaling can lower stress and anxiety levels, again by helping you process difficult situations and externalise thoughts or worries – often making them feel more manageable. Plus, seeing your thoughts written down often reveals solutions you hadn’t considered before.
3. It boosts self-awareness
Self-care isn’t just about soothing yourself in the moment—it’s about long-term growth! Journaling encourages self-reflection and allows you to truly get to know yourself. It can help you to recognise patterns in your thoughts, behaviours and emotions. Are certain situations always triggering stress, for example? Or do you feel joyful after specific activities? Understanding yourself better helps you make choices that support your wellbeing and happiness.
4. It encourages positivity!
Journaling isn’t just for venting—it’s a great way to focus on the good in your life (as I hope you’re beginning to realise, if you haven’t already! Making time and space to focus on the things that bring you gratitude, love, awe, joy and other feel-good feelings can be absolutely transformative. And even on the tough days, finding small moments of joy can remind you that there’s always something to appreciate.
5. It creates a ‘me-time’ ritual
Whether you journal for five minutes or a full hour, making space to regularly sit with your journal and your thoughts (and perhaps a cup of tea or coffee in your favourite mug) can be such a wonderful respite in our busy schedules. It’s our time to be free and be ourselves, to notice how we feel, get creative, practice positivity, find cosiness and give ourselves love and CARE. And who doesn’t need more of that?
