Soaking up the light: simple ways to get more vitamin D this June

The long days of June provide a golden opportunity to naturally top up on our vitamin D levels, often called the ‘sunshine vitamin’.

Vitamin D matters because it plays an important role in our wellbeing, including:

  • Bone health: It helps the body absorb calcium, keeping bones strong.

  • Immune support: it can help your immune system function effectively.

  • Mood regulation: Low levels have been linked to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and low mood.

  • Energy: it can contribute to feeling more balanced and ‘well’ overall.

Here are a few ideas for how you can get more of the magic vitamin this month (without spending all day lying in the sun!):

1. Morning walks
Having 10–20 minutes of morning sunlight on your arms, face, or legs is great because it’s softer and less likely to cause skin damage than the midday sun.

2. Journal outside
Why not turn your journaling routine into a sunshine ritual? You could take your practice out in the garden or a nearby park.

3. Lunch break sun
Use your midday break to step outside, even if it’s just for a few minutes sat on a bench. It can do wonders for your body and mind!

4. Open the windows
If you're indoors, position yourself near natural light. Vitamin D synthesis happens mostly through direct skin exposure, but natural light still supports your circadian rhythm and mood.

5. Consider supplements (if needed)
Hey, we can’t predict the weather! If June turns out to be cloudier or wetter than we’d hope, it could be worth topping up with a supplement.
