Your daily prompts for September 2025: Purpose

This month’s all about self-discovery with a big and beautiful theme: PURPOSE. Not necessarily world-changing mission-statement kind of purpose — but rather just feeling a sense of alignment and being tuned into what genuinely matters to you.

So, I’ve created prompts that I hope will help you explore what gives your life meaning (big or small!), what lights you up and the person you are or want to be.

You might feel totally clear on your sense of purpose already or you might have never really thought about it much before… either way, maybe you’ll discover something new with this month’s prompts!

I hope you enjoy these moments of getting to know yourself better, anyway. Journaling can be really great for that 🙂

A few things to remember:

  • Some of the prompts are lighthearted and playful, and others encourage you to take a bit of a deeper dive — but it’s entirely up to you how long you’d like to spend on each. They’re designed for you to be able to take as much or as little time as you like.

  • Likewise, it’s completely up to you whether you’d like to complete the journals prompt everyday or just pick and choose the ones that speak to you the most. Do what feels good to do. If daily journaling feels unrealistic or pressured, then please don’t feel that you have to. Even journaling a couple of times a week can bring amazing benefits to your wellbeing and mindset!

  • Most of the prompts here are designed for you to explore with writing, unless otherwise stated. But please feel free to adapt them if you’d rather draw or collage or use any other creative techniques!

  • Tip — each time you want to get to these prompts you can log in to the Members area and head to this page (I’d recommended bookmarking it for quick access) or if you’d like to be able to access them offline, you could copy & paste all the prompts and save them in your notes app on your phone, or print them out on a piece of paper at the start of the month. Your choice, of course!

Lastly, I’m here to support you so please just send me an email on hannah@journalforjoy.co.uk if you have any questions at any point.

Happy journaling,

Hannah x

The prompts

1. What does ‘having a sense of purpose’ mean to you?

2. If joy was your main compass, what would it guide you towards right now? Explore this with free-writing.

3. I feel like the best version of myself when I am __________________.

4. Choose a core quality that you’d like to embody more of this month, i.e. joyful, calm, kindness, ambitious. Now make a mini action plan for how you could do that.

5. Fill a page with doodles depicting activities that spark joy or make you feel in flow.

6. If you could receive an award for something you’re super proud of, what would it be? You could go a step further and design the award too, if you like!

7. Write a letter to the current version of you from the 90 year old version of you, sharing details about what was important to you throughout your life. Perhaps she’ll give you some advice too.

8. How could you put some kindness out into the world today? Brainstorm ideas!

9. Ask someone who knows you (or several people!) to list your top 5 qualities. Write them down in your journal.

10. What do you bring to the world, big or small? Perhaps it’s something you do to help or inspire people, nature or animals.

11. Draw some speech bubbles on your page. Fill them with words that you’d hope people would say about you when you’re not around.

12. Do you believe that people have ‘a calling’? Why? Or why not?

13. Write a list of 10 things you feel grateful for today. Now notice if there are any patterns – and what that means about what’s important to you.

14. What’s a hobby or skill you’d like to start or develop? Write down three steps that you can take towards doing this before the end of 2025.

15. What gives you goosebumps (in a good way!)?

16. If I could do absolutely anything today, I would __________________.

17. If you had an infinite supply of money, what would you continue to do in your life?

18. What elements of nature bring meaning to your life?

19. Write down something you’re good at. Now, can you come up with any new ways that you could play to this strength? Brainstorm some ideas!

20. If someone was doing a speech about you and your life at your 85th birthday party, what would you want them to say?

21. List 5 good reasons to prioritise joy today.

22. When’s the last time you felt totally satisfied after completing a task? What were you doing?

23. Draw a heart on your page. Inside, write down the best piece of advice you ever received.

24. Write about a challenge you have overcome and how it has shaped you.

25. Who and what would you not want to live without? Make a list.

26. If you could grant three wishes for yourself, what would they be? What does this tell you about what’s important to you?

27. Who inspires you? What is it about them that inspires you? And what does this uncover about you (perhaps you aspire to have the same traits, for example)?

28. Sketch the moment you achieved a goal that you set yourself. Write about how it made you feel.

29. What (or who) is your main motivator in life? Why?

30. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Free-write to see where this takes you:
When I listen to my heart, it is telling me to ______________.
